Kay Seohyung Lee (이서형) was born in 1995 in Seoul, Korea. She grew up right next to the US Army Garrison Yongsan Base, in a neighborhood saturated with the sounds of US military helicopters and traces of the Korean War. Lee was raised learning how to pronounce English words before she could even write in Korean, watching movies about white Americans where people of color served as background props (and their languages treated as noises), playing games where bodies like hers were treated as villains and sexual spectacles. She moved to the US when she was 14, where she was constantly reminded of her otherness, which ultimately led her to foster intense and endless hatred toward every aspect of herself.
Although she has spent half of her life in the US, American society continues to remain an unsolvable mystery to Lee. English as a language doesn't make much sense to her still, and seeing things like that particular hot pink concession stand that was selling pizza and fried chicken in the midst of the January 6th US Capitol attack confuses yet amuses her. Whenever she returns to Seoul, she finds herself labeled as a foreigner and an outsider, where she is asked to use her English name instead of her Korean name in the art world. Absurdity, chaos, and solitude inspire and drive her practice.
Lee's work is a map of her desires and despairs. Her inside jokes with the world, snippets of current social imagery, and countless bruises and cuts she gained during her lifetime live together harmoniously in the strange scapes Lee creates. In her most recent body of work, "Hellscapes," Lee explores her complex relationships with her own body, gender identity, sexuality, religion, culture, language, relationships, and surroundings. Hatred, embrace, and mild discomfort coexist in the dreamscapes she creates through paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and VR art.
Lee earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2018 and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021. She currently lives in Philadelphia, where she works as a part-time lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University, Camden. Her works have been shown in Seoul, Gimpo, Seongnam, Gongju, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Paris. She likes to play open-world survival games, explore local restaurants, and host Korean BBQ on her balcony in her free time. She has a cat named Rye that broke into her apartment the day her master's thesis was due.

미국에서 인생의 반을 보낸 그녀지만 현대 미국 사회는 여전히 작가에게 풀지 못하는 난제로 남아있다. 영어라는 언어는 도통 이해가 되지 않을 때가 많으며 (왜 켄자스의 발음은 켄자스이나 아칸소의 발음은 아켄자스가 아닌가), 21년 1월 6일 미국 의사당 점거 사건 당시 시위대 한가운데 위치해있던, 피자와 치킨을 팔던 형광 핑크색 천막같은 것들은 그녀를 혼란시키는 동시에 매료시킨다. 작가는 한국에 귀국할 때마다, 미국에서 수도 없이 겪었던, 이방인 취급을 다시금 겪고는 한다. 전시나 미술 시장에서 그녀는 그녀의 한국 이름 대신, 더 ‘미국스러운’ 영어 이름을 쓰기를 요구받는다. 세상의 우스꽝스럽고 터무니없음, 혼돈, 그리고 그 안의 고독 속에서 작가는 영감을 얻는다.
이서형 작가의 작품은 그녀의 욕망과 절망의 지도다. 그녀와 세상이 공유하는 실없는 농담들, 사회적 이미지들의 조각들, 그리고 그녀가 살며 얻는 수많은 멍과 생채기들, 이 모든 것들이 그녀의 작품들 속에서 공존한다. 그녀의 최근 시리즈 “헬스케이프(지옥도)”는 그녀가 스스로의 몸, 성정체성, 종교, 문화, 언어, 인간관계들 그리고 그녀가 처한 환경들과 가진 복잡한 관계에 대해 고찰한다. 증오, 포용, 그리고 미묘한 불편함들은 회화, 드로잉, 조각, 설치작업 그리고 vr작업을 통해 만들어지는 그녀의 환상세계에서 다같이 살아 숨쉰다.
작가는 2018년에 세인트루이스 워싱턴 대학교에서 순수미술 학사학위를, 2021년에 펜실베니아 대학교에서 순수미술 석사학위를 취득했다. 그녀는 현재 미국 필라델피아에서 거주하며 펜실베니아 대학교, 그리고 캠든 럿거스 대학교에서 시간강사로 재직하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 서울, 김포, 성남, 공주, 세인트 루이스, 필라델피아, 로스엔젤레스, 파리 등에서 전시되었다. 작가는 여가 시간에 오픈월드 서바이벌 게임, 맛집 탐방 그리고 친구들과의 고기 파티를 즐겨 하곤 한다. 그녀에게는 그녀의 석사 논문 제출 데드라인 당일 그녀의 집에 무단침입한 빵돌이라는 이름의 고양이가 있다.
